California Prisons At 140% Of Design Capacity As Of May 14, 2014
As of May 14, 2014, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that the state’s 34 adult institutions housed 116,428 inmates, putting the prison system at 140.8% capacity and in compliance with a federal court order to reduce the prison population to 143% of design capacity by June 30, 2014. The June 30 population target is 118,270. The prison system is designed to house 82,707 inmates. However, 13 facilities are still above 140.8% of capacity, with four prison populations at or above 170% of design capacity for that facility.
