California To Begin Paroling More Elderly, Medically Frail Inmates

On June 16, 2014, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) informed the panel of three federal judges overseeing the state’s compliance with a court order to reduce the prison population, that it was preparing parole processes for medically frail inmates and elderly inmates. CDCR is working with its Board of Parole Hearings (BPH) and the prison health care Receiver’s office to revise hearing and placement procedures for medically frail inmates. The revised procedures apply to medical parole hearings conducted after July 1, 2014. CDCR estimates that there are approximately 85 such inmates who would be eligible . . .
