Quality Of Care Better In Medical Homes Using EHRs

Patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs) that use electronic health records (EHRs) improved the care of patients when compared to both primary care physicians using paper records, and primary physicians who used EHRs but were not affiliated with a medical home. The odds of overall quality improvement in the “PCMH group” was seven percent higher than the “paper group” and six percent higher than in the “EHR group.” The PCMH group improved over the other groups in four out of the 10 measures, including eye examinations and hemoglobin A1c testing for patients with diabetes, chlamydia screening, and colorectal cancer screening.
