Nearly Half Of Plans Sold On Insurance Marketplaces Have Narrow Provider Organization Networks
About 48% of health plans offered through the federal and state health insurance marketplaces feature narrow hospital networks, according to an analysis by the McKinsey Center for U.S. Health System Reform. For the analysis, McKinsey defined a narrow network as one in which less than 70% of the 20 largest hospitals in the plan area are in-network provider organizations for the plan. In a broad network, more than 70% of the 20 largest hospitals are in-network. In the largest cities in each state, about 60% of the marketplace plans for each city had narrow networks.
