Pace Of Implementation Of Health Information Technology Uneven: EHR Adoption Accelerates, But Progress Towards Meaningful Use Stage 2 & Information Exchange Lags
During 2013, hospitals and health care systems increased their adoption of electronic health records (EHRs), but progress was slower toward meeting the Stage 2 requirements for meaningful use of health information technology and exchanging patient information electronically. About 59% of hospitals have at least a basic EHR, and 25.5% have a comprehensive EHR. About half of small and rural hospitals have at least a basic EHR, but fewer have a comprehensive EHR, 21.1% and 16.8% respectively, than large (38.9%) or urban (28.6%) hospitals.
