The Aging Workforce: Challenges for the Health Care Industry Workforce
March 15, 2013
The National Technical Assistance and Research Leadership Center's brief describes the challenges posed by an aging workforce in the health care industry, and the strategies that could potentially be used to retain older health care professionals. Authors Laurie Harrington and Maria Heidkamp found that almost 50% of all registered nurses will reach traditional retirement age by 2020, and that about 25% of all doctors are currently older than age 60. The brief also outlines current practices used to retain older workers, and recommends new practices for employers and policymakers.
