New Mexico Had 321 Practicing Psychiatrists In 2013, But 25 Counties Had Shortages
In 2013, New Mexico had an estimated 321 actively practicing psychiatrists, but due to over-concentrations in urban counties, 25 of New Mexico's 33 counties needed at least one more psychiatrist. Without distributing the current workforce, to ensure that every 6,500 residents in each of New Mexico’s counties would have access to a psychiatrist, New Mexico needs another 104 psychiatrists. Two-thirds (225 of the 321 psychiatrists statewide) were located in Bernalillo and Santa Fe counties. In all, eight counties had no shortage, and 25 counties needed at least one more psychiatrist.
