Social Security Trustees Project Disability Insurance Trust Will Run Out Of Funds In 2016
The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) trust fund, which provides cash benefits for individuals who cannot work due to a disabling medical or behavioral health condition, faces severe fiscal-sustainability challenges and could run out of money as soon as 2016, assuming current federal policies remain unchanged. In July 2014, the Social Security Administration (SSA) trustees reported that at the end of 2012, the SSDI trust fund had asset reserves of $122.7 billion; income during 2013 totaled $111.2 billion.
