About 62% of physicians who adopted an electronic health record (EHR) between 2010 and 2013 said the possibility of earning financial incentive payments and avoiding financial penalties were a key factor in their decisions to begin using an EHR. About 39% said meeting board certification requirements for EHR use was a major influence. About one-third were influenced by the experience of a trusted colleague who used EHRs (37%), gaining electronic exchange capability (36%), and the availability of technical assistance for EHR implementation (35%).
