Texas Legislature To Consider Closing State Supported Living Centers For People With Developmental Disabilities

During 2015, the Texas legislature will consider a recommendation from the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission that the Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) restructure the State Supported Living Centers (SSLC) system that house people with developmental disabilities. In August 2014, the Sunset Advisory Commission staff recommended that DADS close the Austin SSLC by August 31, 2017. The Sunset Advisory Commission also recommended that DADS establish an SSLC Restructuring Commission to determine the future need for SSLC beds and optimal distribution and submit its recommendations to the legislature by December 1, 2016.
