U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Final Recommendation Statement: Screening & Behavioral Counseling to Reduce Alcohol Misuse

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that primary care professionals screen adults aged 18 or above for alcohol misuse, and provide brief behavioral counseling interventions for anyone engaged in risky or hazardous drinking. The methodology used for this study includes reviewing new evidence on the effectiveness of screening for alcohol misuse for improving health outcomes, the accuracy of different screening approaches, the effectiveness and potential harms of various behavioral counseling interventions on health outcomes, and influences from the health care system that promote or detract from effective screening.
