New York To Raise Age For Juvenile Justice Jurisdiction To 18 By January 2018

In January 2015, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced plans to introduce legislation to change the age of juvenile justice jurisdiction to ages 12 through 18 by January 2018. Currently the juvenile justice system handles offenders between ages seven and 15. Offenders ages 16 and 17 are prosecuted as adults. The change to juvenile justice jurisdiction was recommended by the Governor’s Commission on Youth, Public Safety & Justice.
