Arizona Legislature Delays Enactment of Budget Proposal to Shift Juvenile Justice Costs From State to Counties

OPEN MINDS Weekly News Wire Social Services The Arizona Legislature declined to implement a proposal to abolish the state’s Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) and shift responsibility for those services to the counties by July 2010. ADJC will continue operations through July 2011 while a commission studies the proposal. The proposal was part of Governor Jan Brewer’s executive budget released on January 15, 2010; eliminating ADJC was estimated to save the state $68 million.
