28% of Pediatric ER Visits Could Have Been Handled Through Telemedicine
OPEN MINDS On-Line News Strategic Health Care News About 28% or 12,000 of all 22,628 pediatric emergency room visits in Rochester, New York in 2006 could have been handled by telemedicine. These visits consisted of complaints such as sore throat or ear infection. Other visits to the emergency room were for problems like asthma attacks, which are sometimes treatable through telemedicine, or problems like a serious injury or wound, which is beyond the scope of the technology of the particular telemedicine model that has been in use in Rochester.
