In 2006, 7.2 Million People Under Supervision by Federal, State & Local Criminal Justice Systems
OPEN MINDS On-Line News Social Services In 2006, about 7.2 million people were under supervision by the nation’s criminal justice systems. Of those about two million were in jail or prison; 4.2 million were on probation, and nearly 800,000 were on parole. At the end of 2006, local jails held 766,010 people awaiting trial or serving a sentence. An additional 60,222 persons under jail supervision were serving sentences in the community.
