Aetna Agrees To $120 Million Settlement For Underpaid Claims
On December 7, 2012, Aetna Inc. agreed to a $120 million settlement in a class action lawsuit alleging that the insurer underpaid claims. The class action lawsuit was filed by the American Medical Association, health care professionals, patients, and other groups. The lawsuit charged Aetna with using a faulty database and deliberately underpaying claims for services provided in out-of-network providers. The settlement will cover patients who used out-of-network providers between March 1, 2001 and the present, and provider organizations from June 3, 2003 to the present.
