Students Purchasing Health Insurance From College Self-Funded Plan Not Eligible For Subsidies

About 30 colleges nationwide offer a self-funded student health plan, and the federal government recently designated these plans as minimum essential coverage (MEC) for plan or policy years beginning on or before December 31, 2014. This designation means that college students who purchase health care insurance coverage through a college’s self-funded plan will not be eligible for premium tax credits to defray the cost, but they will  not be subject to tax penalties under the new health care reform provisions requiring the purchase of health insurance.
