34% of Adults Obese in 2011

Nationally, 34% of the adult population is obese with a body mass index (BMI) higher than 30. Over the past three decades, the national percentage of obese adults has more than doubled, from 15% in 1980 to 34% in 2011. Across the states, the adult obesity rate ranges from 19.8% in Colorado to 34.4% in Mississippi. In 38 states over a quarter of the population is obese. In 16 states, the percentage of obese adults in 2011 was significantly higher than the percentage in 2010. Among the remaining states, the 2011 rate remained close to the 2010 rate . . .
