Wilderness-Based Youth Addiction Programs Demonstrate Positive Recovery Outcomes
One year after completing a wilderness-based addiction treatment program, 62% of participants maintained treatment gains and were successfully managing their recovery. Approximately 92% of youth participating in wilderness-based treatment programs for addiction and/or co-occurring mental health disorders reported improvements in symptoms of addiction after completing the program. These symptoms include those that are secondary to substance use, such as impairment in relationships and overall functioning, negative consequences, cravings, and maladaptive coping; as well as symptoms of co-occurring disorders, such as depression, anxiety, panic disorder, suicidality, and sleep disruption.
