City Of Pittsburgh Continues To Challenge Non-Profit UPMC Over Tax-Exempt Status
Since March 2013, the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has been seeking to force the non-profit University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) health care system to remove the organization’s tax-exempt status and require them to pay payroll preparation taxes and 100% of its property taxes—an estimated $20 million per year in tax revenue is at stake. Non-profit organizations designated by the federal government as 501c3 charities are generally exempt from paying municipal property taxes and other taxes.
