Maine Is The First State To Permit Residents To Import Prescription Drugs
On October 9, 2013, a new Maine law went into effect and made Maine the first state in the U.S. to officially allow residents to directly import cheaper prescription drugs from pharmacies licensed in Canada, Britain, Northern Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand. The foreign pharmacies, if licensed in their home countries, will not be required to obtain licensing to operate in Maine or the United States. Maine is already implementing its new “MaineMeds” program with CanaRx, a privately held Canadian mail order prescription company that fills prescriptions sourced through international pharmacies.
