April 3, 2000 Goldstein Insanity Plea Rejected A New York jury rejected Andrew Goldstein’s plea of not guilty by reason of insanity and convicted the schizophrenic man of murder on March 22, 2000. Mr. Goldstein had refused to take his anti-psychotic medication when he pushed Kendra Webdale to her death in front of an oncoming subway train on January 3, 1999. Assistant district attorney William Greenbaum argued that it was revenge, not mental illness, that drove Goldstein to commit the murder. The incident sparked a public outcry that led to the enactment of a new outpatient commitment law . . .
