May 7, 2007 New York Prison System to Provide More Treatment for Inmates With Mental Illness On April 18, 2007, an agreement was reached in New York State that will result in more treatment and less time in solitary confinement for prison inmates with mental illnesses. The settlement in “Disability Advocates, Inc. v. New York State Office of Mental Health, et al.,” was signed on April 27, 2007. Inmates with severe mental illnesses currently in solitary confinement for their safety and the safety of other inmates will be permitted to receive two to four hours of therapy outside the cell . . .
