Medicare beneficiaries age 65 and older spend an average of $1,885 out-of-pocket each year for recurring health care services, such as routine physician visits, dental care, and prescription medications for chronic health conditions. Average annual out-of-pocket costs for non-recurring health care services (such as hospitalization, nursing facility stays, outpatient surgery, and home health care) increased with age. Total average annual out-of-pocket costs for recurring and non-recurring health care services totaled $4,383 for beneficiaries ages 65 to 74 and $6,603 for beneficiaries age 85 and older.
