Medicare beneficiaries age 65 and older spend an average of $1,885 out-of-pocket each year for recurring health care services, such as routine physician visits, dental care, and prescription medications for chronic health conditions. Average annual out-of-pocket costs for non-recurring health care services (such as hospitalization, nursing facility stays, outpatient surgery, and home health care) increased with age.
