DOJ & Georgia Agree On Reforms Regarding Treatment Of Muscogee County Jail Inmates With SMI

On January 21, 2015, the federal Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it had reached an agreement with the City of Columbus, Georgia that will address treatment of inmates with serious mental illness (SMI) at the Muscogee County Jail. The agreement is part of 1999 consent decree that requires the city and county to reform its mental health system. The goal of the agreement is to improve the quality of mental health care services in the Muscogee County Jail, while helping to minimize violence in the facility.
