After California Medicaid Expansion, Emergency Department Visits Increased 50%
After California expanded Medicaid, emergency department volume among the expansion population increased by 50%. Visit volume had been about 800,000 visits, and rose to 1.16 million visits between the last quarter of 2013 and the last quarter of 2014.
These findings were reported in “Emergency Department Encounters By Expected Payer” by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development of the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS).
During the same period, the number visits by uninsured individuals dropped by nearly half, from about 500,000 to 278,012.
