July 10, 2006 Tenet Healthcare Corporation Agrees to Pay $900 Million to Settle Medicare Fraud Claims On June 29, 2006, Tenet Healthcare Corporation (THC) agreed to pay $900 million to settle claims of a possible Medicare fraud investigation brought by the United States Justice Department. The alleged questionable billing practices included: inflating care costs in order to receive outlier payments; paying physician relocation incentives that functioned like kickbacks; and improper Medicare coding that assigned diagnosis codes in order to increase reimbursement.
