September 24, 2007 Canadian Government Creates New Mental Health Commission On September 10, 2007, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the names of the appointed directors and committee chairs of the first Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). Former Senator Michael Kirby will serve as the first chair of the commission. The main priorities for the new commission are to: Create a national mental health strategy Fight discrimination and stigma against people with mental illnesses Improve knowledge exchange To address these goals, the commission hopes to create an Internet-based exchange that would allow governments, service providers, researchers, and citizens . . .
