Mental Health Disorders The Leading Cause Of Hospitalizations For Texas Children Ages 10 To 14

About 30% of hospitalizations from 2004 to 2010 for Texas youth ages 10 to 14 were for behavioral health disorders, at a cost of $51 million for 11,067 hospitalizations. Over the period, the rate of mental health diagnoses among children’s hospitalizations increased by 2.5%.

There were a total of 36,165 hospitalizations among Texas children ages 10 to 14. Other causes of hospitalization were as follows:

14.4% (5,199) were for digestive system disorders
9.0% (3,244) were for respiratory system disorders
