On August 6, 2015, Fairfax County, Virginia announced plans to launch a jail diversion program and new community-based crisis mental health services to reduce the number people with mental illness held in the county jail. The new approach, dubbed “Diversion First,” has four key components. The county seeks to launch a basic jail diversion program by January 1, 2016, with additional expansion and development planned for the next three to five years.
