Fairfax County, Virginia To Launch Diversion Program & Crisis Services To Reduce Jail Population Of Offenders With Mental Illness
On August 6, 2015, Fairfax County, Virginia announced plans to launch a jail diversion program and new community-based crisis mental health services to reduce the number people with mental illness held in the county jail. The new approach, dubbed “Diversion First,” has four key components. The county seeks to launch a basic jail diversion program by January 1, 2016, with additional expansion and development planned for the next three to five years. A key goal is changing how law enforcement interacts with offenders with mental illness.
