In 2012, nearly 31% of hospitals in the United States electronically exchanged patient medication history information with other hospitals outside their system. About 37% of hospitals electronically shared patient medication history with ambulatory provider organizations outside their systems. In 2009, only 13% of hospitals shared patient medication histories electronically with other hospitals and 28% shared the information with ambulatory provider organizations outside their systems.
