Chronic Understaffing Of Florida Prisons Creates Safety Risk
Chronic understaffing at Florida prisons creates a safety risk due to a lack of experienced facility and supervisory staff. In some Florida prisons, the average tenure for correctional officers is less than one year. Security supervisors’ responsibilities were too great to provide these inexperienced staff with consistent guidance and oversight. The lack of adequate staff also affects prison programming and training; presently only 14% of the inmate population is able to participate in core inmate programs for education, vocational training, and addiction treatment.
