90% Of Patient-Centered Medical Home Studies Report Lower Costs & Lower Utilization
According to a recent review of studies and outcome reports conducted by the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative (PCPCC), more than 90% of studies report that primary care settings structured as patient-centered medical homes (PCMH) are associated with lowering patient care costs and utilization. These lowered costs and utilizations were generally due to a reduction in unnecessary utilization, such as emergency department visits, inpatient hospitalizations, and hospital readmissions. The trend across the studies that were reviewed suggested that the longer the PCMH was in operation, the greater the savings in costs and utilization.
