Consolidation Among North Carolina Public Behavioral Health MCOs Continues: Eight Entities To Become Four

On March 17, 2016, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced mergers between the eight public behavioral health managed care organizations (MCOs) to form four regional behavioral health entities. Some of the eight MCOs had already submitted merger plans; but in 2015, DHHS put a hold on the process while state legislators considered larger plans for Medicaid reform. In September 2015, the governor signed legislation to end the state’s current behavioral health carve out over the next four years.

The consolidating organizations are:

North Central Region: CenterPoint Human Services and Cardinal Innovations Healthcare Solutions
