About 20.5% of all hospital costs are due to five conditions: septicemia; osteoarthritis; care for newborn infants; complication of device, implant or graft; and acute myocardial infarction. The 20 most expensive conditions accounted for 47.7% of aggregate hospital costs, and 43.7% of all hospital stays. Seven conditions were among the 20 most expensive conditions for all four payer groups: Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance and uninsured stays in 2013.
