Ohio Medicaid Seeking Approval To Mandate Enrollment In A Health Savings Account
On June 30, 2016, the Ohio Medicaid program submitted its Healthy Ohio Program 1115 Demonstration Waiver for federal approval. A key provision requests federal permission to mandate enrollment in a Buckeye Account, a Health Savings Account, for every non-disabled adult enrolled in Medicaid. The goal is to give members incentives to take responsibility for their health, and to introduce them to commercial market features to ease the transition out of public assistance. Further, the state is requesting permission to establish a program design to support employment, and encourage private market coverage.
