About 40% Of Inmates In San Francisco County Jail Need Behavioral Health Services; 15% Are Treated For Serious Mental Illness
From 35% to 40% of the 1,270 inmates in the San Francisco jails receive care from Jail Behavioral Health Services. About 15% of the jail inmates are being treated for a serious mental illness (SMI). Health issues, mental illness and substance abuse problems are common among inmates, and 31% have been homeless within the past year.
About 83% of the county jail inmates have been charged but not yet convicted of a crime, or have been convicted of a crime but not sentenced. The recidivism rate for San Francisco inmates meeting SMI criteria is 47%, which is much lower . . .
