About 1.3% Of United States Prison Population Has HIV

Between 2005 and 2015, about 1.3% of prisoners in the United States were diagnosed with HIV. Worldwide, across 74 countries, about 3.8% of prisoners were diagnosed with HIV. The prevalence of prisoners with HIV was highest in countries in eastern and southern Africa, at 15.6%, followed by 8.2% in western and central Africa; 4.2% in western Europe; and 4.1% in eastern Europe, and central Asia.
