Medicaid Expansion States Have Higher Consumer Access To Care
People living in states that have expanded Medicaid have a greater degree of access to care than people living in states that have not. In states that expanded Medicaid, the number of uninsured adults between ages 19 and 64 dropped by 9.2 percentage points between 2014 and 2016, from 18.5% to 9.3%, representing a 49.5% decline in the uninsured rate. In states that did not expand Medicaid, the number of uninsured non-elderly adults dropped by 7.9 percentage points, from 23.3% to 15.4%, representing a 33.8% decline in the uninsured rate.
