OPEN MINDS Releases New Market Intelligence Report Series With An Update On Medicare Specialty Plans
Gettysburg, Pa. (September 26, 2016) — The OPEN MINDS Market Intelligence Team recently released a new series of Market Intelligence Reports that will provide annual updates and can be used guide to the Medicare specialty plan marketplace.
Created as part of Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, Medicare Advantage special needs plans (SNPs) have been in operation since 2006. SNPs are a specific type of Medicare Advantage plan that serve Medicare beneficiaries with complex conditions and needs. Plans must offer the full-continuum of Medicare benefits including Part A, Part B, and Part D. In addition, plans must offer supplemental benefits and develop a model of care specific to the beneficiaries being served. There are three types of SNPs that serve different subsets of the Medicare population: dual eligibles (D-SNPs), consumers with chronic conditions (C-SNPs), and consumers in institutions (I-SNPs).
The OPEN MINDS Market Intelligence Report, Medicare Specialty Vertical Carve-Out Plans: The 2016 OPEN MINDS Medicare SNP Market Share Report, includes a breakdown of Medicare SNP enrollment by the type of consumer plan, an explanation of historical trends, and also includes:
- An explanation of the SNP model
- An overview of the Medicare Advantage SNP landscape
- The top ten largest Medicare Advantage SNP insurers and a profile on each of their organizations
This report is the first in a series of annual updates that will be published by OPEN MINDS. Through primary research and original analysis, this annual report serves as a guide to the Medicare specialty plan marketplace.
The second market intelligence report in the series, Medicare Specialty Plans For Dual Eligibles: The 2016 OPEN MINDS D-SNP Report, takes a detailed look at the D-SNP health plans and topics related to understanding the Medicare specialty plan market for dual eligible including:
- An explanation of the D-SNP model
- An overview of the Medicare Advantage SNP landscape
- A list of the D-SNP health plans available in each state including enrollment
- The top ten Medicare Advantage D-SNP insurers and a profile on each of their organizations
The third and final market intelligence report in the series, Medicare Specialty Plans For Consumers With Chronic Conditions: The 2016 OPEN MINDS C-SNP & I-SNP Report, looks at the C-SNP & I-SNP health plans and topics related to understanding the Medicare specialty plan market for consumers with chronic conditions including:
- An explanation of the C-SNP and I-SNP model
- An overview of the Medicare Advantage SNP landscape
- A list of the C-SNP and I-SNP health plans in each state including enrollment

“Although much of the focus on the complex consumer population is in Medicaid, there are a large portion of consumers with complex support needs in Medicare – specifically in SNPs,” explains Athena Mandros, OPEN MINDS Market Intelligence Manager and co-author of the reports. “With such a large portion of Medicare enrollees in SNPs, organizations should aim to better understand the Medicare SNP landscape and the consumers enrolled.”
