Pennsylvania To Close Two Institutions Serving People With I/DD By 2019

On January 11, 2017, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) announced plans to close two institutions that house people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Within 18 to 24 months, the state plans to close Hamburg State Center (Hamburg Center) and the civil commitment section of Norristown State Hospital (Norristown). The closures are slated to occur after all residents are transitioned to community placements. About 210 people are affected.
