Los Angeles County in California is planning to expand its Sheriff’s Department Mental Evaluation Teams to provide 24-hour availability. On January 11, 2016, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to fund 25 more sheriff’s department employees for the teams. The expansion is projected to cost $4.7 million for the first year. The increase would more than double the number of Mental Evaluation Teams from 10 to 23 and create a “triage help desk” for residents to call during a psychological crisis.
