North Carolina Initiative Doubles Supportive Housing Capacity For People With SMI
From 2015 through 2016, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Transitions to Community Living Initiative nearly doubled the state’s supportive housing capacity for people with serious mental illness (SMI). Capacity increased from 649 in 2015 to 1,123 at the end of 2016. During this period, 884 individuals remained in their supportive housing situations through the year.
The state is in the process of complying with the terms of a settlement agreement signed in the August 2012 agreement with the federal Department of Justice (DOJ). The agreement resolved a complaint to DOJ filed in 2010 . . .
