6 States — Arizona, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, & Utah — Seeking IMD Waivers
Six states have applied for a Medicaid waiver to the Institution for Mental Disease (IMD) exclusion, so that Medicaid managed care programs can reimburse for mental health or addiction treatment services provided for up to 15 days in a given month to adults ages 21 to 64 in a residential treatment setting with 16 or more beds. The six states with applications pending are Arizona, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, and Utah. Since 2015, 10 states have applied for, and four of them have been granted. The four states with approved waivers are California, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia.
