New York Raises Age Of Juvenile Justice System
When the New York State budget was signed on April 10, 2017, it included a provision to raise the age for the state’s juvenile justice system to 18 by October 2019. Currently, New York’s criminal justice system processes 16 and 17-year old offenders in the adult system. Under the provisions in the budget, starting October 2018, offenders age 17 and younger will be handled through the juvenile court system. The next year, the age will increase to 18. The legislation also ensures that youth who commit non-violent crimes will receive intervention and evidence-based treatment.
