47% Of Physicians Own Their Practices; Ownership On The Decline
In 2016, about 47% of physicians had an ownership stake in their practices, an equivalent number of physicians were employees in their practices, and 5.9% are independent contractors. The prevalence of physician practice ownership has declined by six percentage points since 2012 when 53% of physicians owned their practices. During the same period, 2012 to 2016, the percentage of physicians who were employees in their practice increased, from 41.8% in 2012 to 47.1% in 2016.
