EHR Vendor eClinicalWorks Settles False Claims Case For $155 Million

On May 31, 2017, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that electronic health record (EHR) vendor eClinicalWorks (ECW) agreed to pay $155 million to settle a False Claims Act complaint. The settlement resolves a whistleblower lawsuit that alleged ECW misrepresented the capabilities of its software, and paid kickbacks to certain customers in exchange for promoting its product. As part of the settlement, ECW entered into a five-year Corporate Integrity Agreement (CIA) with the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) covering the company’s EHR software.
