0.2% Of Pennsylvania Residents Had 5 Or More Hospitalizations; Costs Are 10% Of Total Hospital Payments
Almost 22,000 Pennsylvania residents, about 0.17% of the state's population, had five or more hospital stays during 2016, and their hospital costs were $1.25 billion, accounting for about 10% of the total hospital payments that year. Due to their higher than average hospital admission rates and their higher than average hospital costs, these residents are considered “super-utilizers.” About 3% of all Pennsylvania residents admitted to a hospital in 2016 were “super-utilizers.” In 2016, Pennsylvania “super-utilizers” accounted for 12% of the total 1,181,733 hospital admissions, and 15% of the 5,632,040 . . .
