New Maine Law Requires Health Plans To Pay The Difference To Members Who Find Better Prices On Certain Health Services

Under a new Maine law, health insurers must compensate small group members who find a lower than average price on many common medical services, such as imaging and lab work. The law requires health plans with a linked health savings account to offer members use of a shopping tool to search for services by price. If members find and are willing to use an in-or-out-of-network provider organization that offers a lower than average price for the service or procedure, then the health plan will pay the member a share of the difference between the average price . . .
