18 States & D.C. Sue Department Of Education Over Refusal To Enforce Gainful Employment Rule On For-Profit Colleges & Technical Schools

On October 17, 2017, 18 states, and the District of Columbia, sued federal Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for refusing to enforce a regulation requiring for-profit colleges, technical schools, and non-degree programs to demonstrate that they “prepare students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation” under the Higher Education Act. On June 14, 2017, DeVos announced that she would delay enforcement of this rule.

The rule in question was to go into effect on July 1, 2017. The rule affects these for-profit "career colleges" that often leave students in large amounts of debts and in jobs . . .
